On the Road to Recovery: Navigating Travel with an Injury

February 5, 2024 Posted by Myles Olsen Therapy

With the NFL’s Super Bowl 58 taking place next weekend between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, there has been some buzz about how Taylor Swift will travel from Japan to Las Vegas in time for kickoff to support her boyfriend Travis Kelce. Since most of us do not have a private jet like Taylor, traveling on a good day can be uncomfortable, but adding a new or old injury to the picture can make things that much more unbearable. Below are a few tips to keep in mind next time you travel with aches and pains!

Seat Location

For any type of injury, upper or lower body, it is important to break the cycle of staying in a position for a prolonged period. When selecting your seat on the plane, go with an aisle seat. This will allow for easy access to get up and move around the plane, but also let you stretch out a leg or two in the aisle or shift positions easily.

Hydration

Planes can be in a very dry environment with low humidity. Bring a reusable water bottle to fill up POST security. This way you can avoid paying $8 for a small bottle at the airport.

Smart Packing

Be comfortable. Sitting in jeans for example can be restrictive and cause general discomfort. Make sure to wear clothing that will help make a better environment for your injury.

Plan Ahead

Commercial aircraft do not always have a lot of space for activities, but there are ways to include activities to help with your specific aches and pains. It is important to have a plan that includes activity modifications for travel. Working with an Athletic Therapist before traveling to create a home exercise program specific to your goals that takes into consideration your environment.
