You’ve probably heard the term before, but what really is Functional Training? Simply put, Functional Strength refers to the body’s resiliency to complete tasks with resiliency against injury. Functional training is the OPPOSITE of sport-specific training.

Many forms of functional training can be used alongside or instead of traditional strength training (think bench press, deadlift, clean and jerk). At Guelph Performance, our trainer, Vlad, offers specialized GMB (Gold Medal Bodies) and TRX (Total Resistance Exercises). GMB is a system of training using body weight movements in natural patterns that we don’t use enough in our sitting society — think animalistic bodyweight movement patterns. TRX is a suspension system that takes away some of the impact of exercise, allowing us to access stability and motion that we might not have been able to find!
