A Thoughtful, Assessment-First Approach with Emily at Guelph Performance
Custom orthotics can be a powerful tool—but they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution.
At Guelph Performance, we take an assessment-first approach to orthotics, led by Emily Laudi, DC, CAT(C). Before recommending custom orthotics, Emily looks at the whole picture: how you move, how your body is compensating, and what your actual goals are.
Orthotics Are a Tool, Not a Default
There’s a common misconception that foot pain, knee pain, or back pain automatically means you “need orthotics.” In reality, orthotics are just one possible tool in a larger rehab and performance plan.
Some people benefit significantly from custom orthotics. Others improve faster—and more sustainably—through strength work, mobility, footwear changes, or load management instead.
That’s why Emily never starts with the orthotics themselves. She starts with you.
What Emily Assesses
During your assessment, Emily looks at:
- Your injury history and current symptoms
- Standing posture and foot mechanics
- Walking and/or running gait
- Strength, mobility, and movement patterns up the chain (ankles, knees, hips)
- Your sport, training volume, work demands, and footwear
This comprehensive assessment helps determine whether custom orthotics would actually support your rehab—or potentially be unnecessary.
When Orthotics Do Make Sense
Custom orthotics may be recommended when they can:
- Reduce excessive strain on irritated tissues
- Improve force distribution during walking or running
- Support structural or biomechanical needs that can’t be addressed with exercise alone
- Act as a temporary aid while strength and control are being rebuilt
When orthotics are appropriate, Emily uses FootMaxx custom orthotics, which are designed based on precise biomechanical data—not generic templates.
When They Don’t
Just as importantly, Emily will tell you when orthotics aren’t the right answer.
If your symptoms are better addressed through:
- Targeted strengthening
- Mobility or motor control work
- Load management or training adjustments
- Footwear recommendations
…you’ll be guided in that direction instead. No upselling. No unnecessary devices.
The Goal: Long-Term Results
Whether orthotics are part of your plan or not, the goal is always the same:
- Reduce pain
- Improve function
- Keep you moving confidently in sport, work, and daily life
Orthotics, when used appropriately, can support that goal—but they’re never prescribed in isolation.
